Meditation: The Ultimate Getaway

Meditation is the only real vacation we’ll ever get. There are no lists to make, no suitcases to pack, no airline flight, no worries.  Best of all, you don’t have to leave home and you don’t need a vacation from your vacation.

Thinking of beginning a meditation practice? Perhaps you’ve heard of all its benefits. Or maybe you know a long time meditator and you’re curious about why they seem so different from everyone else you know.

Meditation is a wonderful respite from thoughts that ramble on virtually every waking moment of our lives.

Most of us have around 60,000 thoughts a day and they’re pretty much the same ones we had yesterday. It’s mentally exhausting. We make to-do lists, set goals, and keep calendars filled with events that are so important we don’t dare forget them. Life’s ups and downs keep us on a roller-coaster that only stops when we climb upon the merry-go-round. Sleep (or nap if you’re lucky!) is never far from your mind, for you know it will end the madness that threatens to drive you crazy!

Physical, mental and emotional exhaustion weighs heavy upon us; affecting our immune system, mood and creativity. I discovered meditation at a time in my life when I was at the point of “losing it.” I remember thinking, “I’m dancing as fast as I can!” I needed a break from my brain but I didn’t know how get it. Divine intervention brought me to my local college for a yoga/meditation class and it didn’t take me long to realize this was the salvation I needed.

Women, having use of both hemispheres of the brain, think A LOT. Our minds are so active we need structure to keep it all together. We can walk a tightrope with perfect balance (most of the time!) or live on the edge, gasping for breath, moving from one shaky step (crisis) to another.

What I absolutely love about meditation, in addition to the peace it brings to daily life, is the fact that it makes the brain smarter. Yea, I said it, it makes you smarter. Scientists have clinically proven that it rewires the brain! Imagine the structure of your brain altering and creating new neural pathways. If that was the only benefit to meditation it would be worth it.

I’ve always been mentally active, but when I began meditating daily my brain went into hyper-drive! Am I a genius? Probably not, however…  I can draft a story or come up with ideas for 6 stories in the time it takes to do a 10 minute shower. Some days it gets a little crazy trying to keep it all in my head before I can write it down. I know what you’re thinking, “Get a recorder.” I have one; I just have to remember to take it to the shower!!

And while keeping one’s sanity is a great reason to meditate, it’s not the reason most people do it. If you study the practice of those who meditate you’ll find they all do it for the same reason: Connection to the Divine/Higher Power/God. Meditation frees the mind of random thought and creates a pathway that opens your heart to God/Higher Power. Your spiritual “Self,” transcends the mind; the intellect. There is no data to analyze and what you need to know is revealed. More accurately, what you have forgotten, you will remember.

Meditation is the ultimate getaway that never ends!
